Immigration: A Radical & Liberal Rethink

There are three things (I refer to them as “Parameters” of the problem) that we do know about the immigration influx into Europe (the “Influx”):

1. The Influx cannot be abated with policing measures – the notion of “Fortress-Europe” is a chimera (unless we suspend our humanitarian ethics and laws and we start sinking boats, which would be a lamentable outrage that nobody seriously proposes … yet).
2. Wholesale forced repatriation is impossible and unaffordable.
3. Permanent establishment of such great numbers in such short timeframe is unsustainable.

In a recent discussion with fellow Greek colleagues at a legal gathering in Berlin, we soon turned our attention away from the troubles of the Greek economy, and focused on the issue of thousands of illegal economic migrants that have flooded Athens living in inhuman conditions threatening to tear the social fabric apart. Citizens feel besieged, let down by a helpless state. Drugs, violent crime and prostitution, which are necessary companions of a lawless ghetto, complete a bleak picture that has the potential of radicalising the most moderate of humanitarian liberals and turning them into keen listeners of xenophobic rhetoric.
